SAE J3129-2019 specifies the requirements for seamless 304/304L stainless steel tubing used in hydraulic lines and other corrosion‑resistant applications. This standard covers manufacture by cold drawing, bright annealing, and passivation, with strict dimensional tolerances, mechanical properties, and mandatory nondestructive testing.
This SAE Standard applies to seamless pressure tubing in nominal outside diameters from 6 mm up to 140 mm. The material is austenitic stainless steel of types S30400 or S30403 per ASTM A269. The tubing is intended for hydraulic systems and general service where corrosion resistance is needed.
The tubing must be cold drawn and annealed to achieve the specified mechanical properties. The default finish is bright annealed and passivated; oxide annealed, pickled, and passivated finishes are available by agreement. Centerless grinding is prohibited, but a light polish for appearance is allowed provided it is followed by passivation.
The material must conform to the chemical composition of S30400 or S30403. Finished tubing must meet the following mechanical properties:
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Yield Strength, min | 205 MPa |
| Ultimate Strength, min | 515 MPa |
| Elongation in 50 mm, min | 35% |
| Hardness (HRB), max | 90¹ |
| ¹ Not required for tubes with OD < 3.2 mm or wall < 0.4 mm. | |
Outside diameter tolerances are specified in Table 1. Wall thickness tolerance is ±10% of nominal. Straightness must be within 1 mm per 1000 mm length. Tubing ends must be smooth and burr‑free. Surface condition is critical for sealing; it must be free of defects that could create leak paths.
The following OD tolerances apply (measurements taken at least 1.5 × diameter from the end):
| Nominal Tubing OD (mm) | Tolerance ±mm |
|---|---|
| Up to 12.7 | 0.08 |
| Over 12.7 to 25.4 | 0.10 |
| Over 25.4 to 50.80 | 0.15 |
| Over 50.80 to 63.50 | 0.18 |
| Over 63.50 to 76.20 | 0.20 |
| Over 76.20 to 88.90 | 0.25 |
| Over 88.90 to 139.7 | 0.38 |
All tubing must pass flattening, flaring, reverse flattening, tensile, and elongation tests per ASTM A1016. A pressure proof test is performed if agreed upon. Nondestructive electronic testing (eddy current or ultrasonic) is required after all cold‑working and thermal operations.
🛠️ Design Insight: When specifying tubing, always reference SAE J1453 for compatible nominal OD for standard hydraulic tube fittings and SAE J533 for recommended maximum wall thickness for double flaring. This ensures proper fit and leak‑free connections.
1. What is the main difference between SAE J3129 and AMS5565/AMS5567?
SAE J3129 applies to seamless tubing only, while AMS5565 covers welded tubing and AMS5567 covers both seamless and welded hydraulic tubing.
2. Are there any exceptions to the hardness requirement?
Yes. Hardness testing is not required for tubes with an outside diameter less than 3.2 mm or a wall thickness below 0.4 mm.
3. When must nondestructive testing be performed?
After all cold‑working and thermal manufacturing operations are completed. This ensures the final product is free from discontinuities.
4. Can I specify a different surface finish than bright annealed and passivated?
Yes, an oxide annealed, pickled, and passivated finish may be agreed upon between the producer and purchaser.
⚠️ Critical Surface Condition: The surface of the tubing, particularly on sealing surfaces for flare and mechanical form fittings, must be free of scratches, roll marks, and other imperfections that could lead to leaks. Always verify surface finish per the standard.
