SAE J3127-2019 defines the performance, dimensional, and manufacturing requirements for welded 304/304L stainless steel tubing intended for hydraulic lines and other corrosion-resistant applications. This standard ensures tubing meets stringent quality and reliability criteria for use in demanding fluid power systems.
The standard mandates that tubing be bright annealed and passivated as a baseline, with oxide annealed and pickled finishes available by agreement. Centerless grinding is expressly prohibited; only light polishing followed by passivation is permissible. Crucially, cold working must be performed after welding and before final heat treatment, either in both the weld and base metal or in the weld metal only.
⚠️ Important: Centerless grinding is not permitted under SAE J3127-2019. Any grinding or polishing must be light and followed immediately by passivation to maintain corrosion resistance.
Material must conform to S30400 or S30403 per ASTM A249M. Surface condition is critical to prevent leak paths, especially for double flare and mechanical form fittings—excessive roll marks, score marks, or chatter marks are unacceptable.
The standard specifies strict dimensional controls. Outside diameter tolerances vary by size, as shown below:

Wall thickness tolerance is ±10% of nominal. The weld wall thickness must not exceed the base wall by more than 6% or 0.1 mm (whichever is greater), except for thick-walled or small‑diameter tubes where the rule does not apply. Tubing must be straight to 1 mm per 1000 mm, and ends must be burr‑free. All tubing must undergo nondestructive testing (eddy current or ultrasonic) after all cold‑working and thermal operations.

Performance tests—flattening, flange, reverse flattening, tensile, elongation, and optionally pressure proof—must be conducted per ASTM A1016. Certificates of compliance are provided upon request. The tubing must be clean, smooth, and free of grease, scale, and other contaminants both inside and out. Packaging must protect the tubing during transport and storage, with special packaging by agreement.
