SAE J2863 provides the minimum requirements for seven-position, self-draining trailer tow connector interfaces in automotive and RV applications operating from 0 to 20 V. This standard defines test methods, design specifications, and performance criteria to ensure reliable and durable electrical connections.
This SAE standard applies specifically to seven-position, self-draining connectors intended for low voltage road vehicle applications. It covers both male and female connector halves, including terminals, seals, and mounting features. The self-draining requirement is critical to prevent moisture buildup that can cause corrosion and electrical failures.
Connectors may optionally be labeled with “SAE J2863™” in Arial font if they meet all mandatory requirements. Manufacturers choosing to label agree to indemnify SAE from liability.
The standard specifies dimensional and functional characteristics. The interface must accommodate seven circuits, with power circuits carrying more than 5 A and signal circuits 5 A or less. Maximum current capability is defined based on temperature rise limits (30 °C over ambient at nominal current).
Materials must withstand environmental exposure. The standard references SAE J1128 for cable and SAE/USCAR-2 for connector system performance. Critical dimensions and tolerances are defined in the standard’s figures.
| Parameter | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Connector type | Seven-position, self-draining |
| Voltage range | 0–20 V DC |
| Power circuit current | >5 A continuous |
| Signal circuit current | ≤5 A |
| Temperature rise limit | 30 °C rise over ambient |
| Environmental tests | Salt spray (ASTM B117), UV exposure (ASTM G153/G154) |
| Optional labeling | “SAE J2863™” in Arial font |
SAE J2863 prescribes detailed test methods for verifying connector performance. Tests include electrical continuity, voltage drop, isolation resistance, and environmental endurance. Sample sizes are specified, and acceptance criteria must be met.
Testing covers mating/unmating forces, contact retention, and robustness to temperature and humidity cycling. The standard also references AIAG’s Measurement Systems Analysis Manual for measurement system validation.
Labeling is optional but carries responsibility. A manufacturer that displays the mark must ensure full compliance and indemnify SAE. The mark must be in Arial font and placed on the outer surface.
Engineers should carefully review the standard’s figures for critical dimensions and adhere to the specified test sequences for compliance.
