The practice for evaluating aging resistance of prestressed prepainted metal uses specific apparatus. A gravity or forced air laboratory oven maintains 60°C ± 3°C (140°F ± 5°F). A bench vise with smooth jaws, permanently mounted, is required for bending operations. Optional equipment includes bending dies, test shims, and a 10X magnifier for examination. Adhesive tape is used for adhesion testing.
Test specimens are cut from prepainted sheet to a width of 75 mm (3 in.) across the bend direction. The length required depends on the number of bends necessary. The bend direction—transverse or longitudinal to the rolling direction—should be as agreed between customer and vendor. Specimens must be equilibrated to the fabrication temperature before bending.
Fabrication is performed at 25°C ± 1°C (77°F ± 2°F). Three T-bend specimens are prepared following Test Method D4145, with the specific T-bend defined by customer-vendor agreement. Initial examination for cracking and tape adhesion is conducted per D4145 and recorded. The specimens are then placed in the oven at 60°C ± 3°C for 16 hours. Alternative times and temperatures may be used if agreed upon. After cooling to room temperature, the tape adhesion test is repeated.
| 📏 Parameter | 🟦 Specification |
|---|---|
| Specimen Width | 75 mm (3 in.) |
| Fabrication Temperature | 25°C ± 1°C (77°F ± 2°F) |
| Oven Temperature | 60°C ± 3°C (140°F ± 5°F) |
| Oven Duration | 16 hours |
After heating and cooling, specimens are reexamined for cracking and tape pick-off. The acceptable degree of these defects must be agreed upon between customer and vendor. The report should include these results and any deviations from standard conditions, ensuring clear communication of quality requirements.
