D6349-21 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

ASTM D6349-21 provides a standardized procedure for the determination of major and minor elements in coal, coke, and solid residues from combustion processes using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). This standard is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Subcommittee D05.29 on Major Elements in Ash and Trace Elements of Coal.

🎯 Scope and Sample Types

This test method covers the analysis of commonly determined major and minor elements in coal, coke, and solid residues from combustion of coal and coke. The specific residue types applicable include laboratory ash, bottom ash, fly ash, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) sludge, and other combustion process residues. The values stated in SI units are regarded as the standard. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices prior to use.

⚙️ Sample Preparation and Analytical Procedure

The analytical procedure begins with the sample being ashed under standard conditions and ignited to constant mass, typically following Test Methods D3174 (Ash in Coal and Coke) and D7348 (Loss on Ignition). The resulting ash is fused with a suitable flux—such as lithium metaborate—and the cooled melt is dissolved in dilute acid. The resulting solution is then analyzed for element concentrations by ICP-AES.

Proper sample collection and preparation are critical for accurate results. Standard Practices D2013 and D346 provide the guidelines for preparing coal and coke samples, respectively. The method’s precision is based on interlaboratory studies conducted in 1997 (RR:D05-1035) and 2007 (RR:D05-1032).

📊 Elements Determined and Precision Data

The method is designed for the analysis of both major and minor elements commonly reported in coal and combustion residues. Sulfur trioxide was specifically included in the 2007 study.

🟦 Element 📏 Reported as 🎯 Precision Study
Silicon (Si)SiO₂1997 & 2007
Aluminum (Al)Al₂O₃1997 & 2007
