The ASTM D6297−20 specification establishes the material, testing, and application requirements for field-molded asphaltic plug joints (APJs). These systems are specifically designed for expansion joint sealing on asphalt concrete overlay and portland cement concrete decks.

APJs can consist of multilayer, single layer, or a combination of both application systems, depending on manufacturing requirements. A critical limitation outlined in the scope is the maximum allowable joint movement: APJs should not be used for movement applications exceeding 625 mm from the installation width. This specification strongly recommends that a practical means of testing the watertightness of individual systems be developed in the field or at a testing laboratory.
