The ASTM D6271-10 (Reapproved 2016) standard, under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D22 on Air Quality, provides a selective test method for quantifying the contribution of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) to respirable suspended particles (RSP). This is achieved through the measurement of solanesol, a C45 isoprenoid alcohol, which acts as a highly specific chemical tracer for tobacco smoke.
The procedure involves collecting total RSP on a 1.0-µm pore size polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane filter. The filter is extracted with methanol, and the solanesol content is determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet (UV) detection. The resulting metric, Solanesol Particulate Matter (Sol-PM), provides the basis for calculating the ETS fraction.
| 🟦 Key Parameter | 📏 Definition / Component |
|---|---|
| ETS (Environmental Tobacco Smoke) | An aged, dilute composite of exhaled mainstream smoke and sidestream smoke. |
| RSP (Respirable Suspended Particles) | Particles passing through a sampler with a 4.0-µm median cutpoint. |
| Sol-PM (Solanesol Particulate Matter) | The tobacco-selective marker for ETS contribution to RSP. |
| Primary Analyte | Solanesol (C45 isoprenoid alcohol) |
| Collection Media | 1.0 µm PTFE membrane filter |
💡 Technical Note: This test method is compatible with the gravimetric RSP, UVPM, and FPM analyses described in ASTM D5955, but does not require them. Unlike the general absorbance/fluorescence methods, Sol-PM offers a chemically specific marker that significantly reduces interference from non-tobacco organic aerosols.
The sampling apparatus consists of a particle size separator (inertial impactor or cyclone) set to a 4.0-µm cutpoint, connected to a filter cassette holding the PTFE membrane. This assembly is attached to a calibrated sampling pump. The method is applicable for both personal and area sampling scenarios.
Sampling duration is flexible, with a minimum of 1 hour recommended and a maximum evaluated duration of 24 hours. The standard sampling rate for the stated LOD calculations is 2 L/min. All values in the standard are expressed in SI units.
| 🎯 Sampling Parameter | ⚡ Specification |
|---|---|
| Particle Size Cutpoint (D50) | 4.0 µm |
| Standard Flow Rate | 2.0 L/min |
| Minimum Sample Duration | 1 hour |
| Maximum Evaluated Duration | 24 hours |
| Analytical Technique | HPLC with UV detection |
