D6190-97 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

ASTM D6190-97 defines an accelerated laboratory procedure for determining the relative cathodic disbonding characteristics of electrically insulating coating systems applied to steel pipe exteriors. By simulating underground service conditions using an electrolyte-soaked sand medium under cathodic protection and elevated temperatures, it offers a controlled alternative to field testing for predicting coating performance.

📐 Scope and Specimen Configurations

This test method covers coated pipe samples taken from commercial production where the coating functions as an electrical barrier to prevent corrosion in underground service. All values are reported in SI units to three significant figures, which are the standard for this method.
