ASTM D6153-23 specifies bridge deck waterproofing membrane systems for use with asphaltic concrete overlays. The standard covers three types of systems, each designed to prevent water passage from the asphalt surface course to the bridge deck. Values stated in inch-pound units are standard, with SI units provided for information only.
| 🟦 Type | 📏 Description | 📐 Application Details |
|---|---|---|
| Type I | Cold applied elastomeric | Liquid-applied, chemically curing, requires protection course |
| Type II | Hot applied elastomeric | Hot-applied, elastomeric, requires protection course |
| Type III | Preformed sheet membrane | Sheet membrane system, no protection course required |
Type I and II systems require a membrane protection course as specified by the manufacturer, while Type III preformed sheets are self-contained systems.
All membrane types must meet physical property requirements outlined in Section 5. Key properties include permeability and pliability, tested under specified conditions as described in the standard.
| 🔧 Property | 📏 Test Method | 🎯 Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Permeability | E96/E96M (water method) | Gravimetric determination |
| Pliability | D146/D146M | 0°F (–18°C) for 24h, 180° bend over 1/4 in. (6 mm) mandrel |
Section 6 requires that materials be proposed as complete systems, specifying all installation components and application rates. When tested at the manufacturer’s recommended rate, membranes must meet the minimum requirements stated in Table 1 of the standard. Section 7 grants purchasers the right to sample and test material at any point prior to incorporation into the deck. The standard is developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established by the WTO TBT Committee.
The standard covers waterproofing membrane systems for bridge decks designed to receive an asphaltic concrete overlay, preventing water passage from the surface to the bridge deck.
Three types: Type I (cold applied elastomeric), Type II (hot applied elastomeric), and Type III (preformed sheet membrane), each with specific installation requirements.
Pliability is tested using Test Method D146/D146M at 0°F (–18°C) after 24 hours, with a 180° bend over a 1/4 in. (6 mm) mandrel.
Permeability is measured using Test Method E96/E96M water method, which determines the water vapor transmission rate gravimetrically.
