D6079-24 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🛢️ Scope and Applicability of D6079–24

ASTM D6079–24, approved December 1, 2024, specifies the standard procedure for evaluating diesel fuel lubricity with the High-Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR). Under Subcommittee D02.E0, it covers middle distillate fuels from Specification D975, including Grades No. 1‑D and No. 2‑D with sulfur levels S15, S500, and S5000. Biodiesel blends are also within scope; B5 was explicitly included in the round‑robin that established the precision statement. Values are stated in SI units, and users must consult Section 7 for specific safety warnings.

Per Note 1, the method is not yet known to predict the performance of all additive/fuel combinations; additional correlation work is underway. This international standard was developed in accordance with WTO/TBT principles and aligns with ISO 12156‑1.

⚙️ Key Apparatus and Material Specifications

Reliable HFRR results depend on tightly controlled materials. The test ball must conform to SAE‑AMS 6440 (SAE 52100 bearing steel) with a specific composition of 0.93–1.05 % carbon and 1.45 % chromium. Dimensional tolerances follow ISO 3290. Hardness verification uses ASTM E18 (Rockwell) or ASTM E92 (Vickers/Knoop). Fuel sampling is governed by Practices D4057, D4177, and D4306 to avoid trace contamination.
