D6029 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

ASTM Standard D6029/D6029M-20 covers the Hantush-Jacob analytical procedure for determining the transmissivity, storage coefficient of a confined aquifer, and the leakance of an overlying or underlying confining bed with negligible storage.

🔬 Scope and Key Assumptions

This practice is designed for analyzing constant-rate pumping or injection test data. The aquifer must be overlain or underlain by a confining bed with uniform hydraulic conductivity and thickness, negligible storage capacity, and bounded by a constant head zone on its distal side. The adjacent confining bed is assumed to be impermeable. The analytical procedure is specifically intended for use in conjunction with Test Method D4050.

⚙️ Analytical Procedure, Units, and Compliance

Drawdown or head data from observation wells or piezometers are matched to Hantush-Jacob type curves. This analysis yields the transmissivity (T) and storage coefficient (S) of the aquifer, as well as the leakance value (K’/b’) of the confining bed.

A critical requirement for compliance is the independent use of unit systems. All values must be computed exclusively in either SI units or inch-pound units; combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. All observed and calculated values must also conform to the significant digit and rounding guidelines established in Practice D6026.
