D6013-00 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Test Scope and Significance

This standard, designated ASTM D6013-00 (Reapproved 2024), covers the determination of launderability of dyed leathers with or without a pigment finish. The procedure is primarily intended to evaluate the ability of a leather specimen to withstand fixed, and rather strenuous, laundering conditions. The resulting area stability is determined. It is important to note that this test method is not intended as a recommended washing procedure, neither household nor commercial, and does not apply to wet blue. The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard.

⚠️ Scope Limitation: This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

⚙️ Apparatus and Key Specifications

The core apparatus is a Launder-Ometer or an equivalent motor-driven assembly. Specimen containers (1 pt / 500 mL) are held with their bases toward a horizontal shaft, 2 in. (50 mm) out from its center of rotation. The speed of rotation is precisely controlled between 40 rpm and 45 rpm. Stainless steel balls, type 316 with a diameter of 1/4 in. (6.4 mm), are used within the specimen containers for additional mechanical agitation. A circulating-air oven capable of maintaining the required temperature of 120 ± 2 °F (49 ± 1 °C) is required for the drying phase, and the entire washing assembly
