SAE J592-2016 is the standard that outlines test methods, performance requirements, and design guidelines for sidemarker lamps used on vehicles with overall width less than 2032 mm. Compliance ensures that these lamps effectively indicate the presence and length of a vehicle when viewed from the side, contributing to overall road safety.
This standard applies to all road vehicles under 2032 mm in overall width. Sidemarker lamps are defined as lighting devices that indicate the vehicle’s presence and length from a side view. Lamps meeting this standard are assigned the lighting identification code “P2” in accordance with SAE J759.
The standard incorporates tests from SAE J575 and SAE J1889, with a testing alternative via SAE J2139. Key tests include vibration, moisture, dust, corrosion, photometry, and warpage. Color specifications follow SAE J578: front and intermediate sidemarker lamps must emit yellow light, while rear lamps must be red.
Photometric performance is evaluated based on zone total requirements, with minimum luminous intensity values specified for each test point zone (see Figures 1 and 2 of the standard). An alternate method for measuring inboard angles is provided for situations where the standard axis is not optimal.
| Position | Color (per SAE J578) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Front | Yellow | Applied to front-most sidemarker |
| Intermediate | Yellow | Required if vehicle length ≥7.6 m |
| Rear | Red | Applied to rear-most sidemarker |
Plastic materials used in optical parts must conform to SAE J576, ensuring thermal and environmental durability.
Sidemarker lamps can be standalone or combined with other lighting functions, provided each function meets its respective standard. An important design insight: for lamps reciprocally incorporated with turn signal or stop lamps that use a replaceable multi-mode light source (e.g., dual-filament bulb), the retention system must include an indexing feature to prevent incorrect bulb installation. This ensures proper orientation and function.
Installation requirements:
1. What does the lighting identification code “P2” signify?
Lamps certified to SAE J592 are marked with the code “P2” per SAE J759, indicating they meet the standard’s requirements for sidemarker lamps.
2. Can a sidemarker lamp be part of a combined tail-stop-turn lamp assembly?
Yes, but each function must independently satisfy its standard. If a multi-mode bulb is used, the lamp must feature an indexing retention system to ensure correct bulb installation.
3. How is the alternate inboard test angle calculated?
As per Section 6.1.5.2, the inboard angle can be measured at 4.57 m from the vehicle on a vertical plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, placed midway between the front and rear sidemarker lamps (see Figure 3 in the standard).
4. What is the minimum mounting height for sidemarker lamps?
The lamp center must be at least 380 mm above the road surface at vehicle curb weight, measured from the device’s center.
