IEC 60229:2007 specifies cable oversheath test methods. The oversheath shoulders three duties: moisture protection, mechanical protection, and chemical protection. Once breached, water and chemicals penetrate; the metallic sheath and insulation begin degrading within months.
| Test | Simulates | Pass Criterion |
|---|---|---|
| ESCR | Bending stress + surfactant (soil chemicals) | 180° bend in Igepal solution,≥48h no cracking |
| Abrasion | Friction wear during duct pulling | Sheath thickness wear ≤50% |
| Thermal Stability | Conductor heat conduction to sheath during short-circuit | Integrity maintained at 200°C |
ESCR — the hidden PE killer: Polyethylene sheaths under combined bending stress + surfactant exposure suffer environmental stress cracking — a mode that does not appear without chemical exposure but can rapidly develop in soil containing various organic and inorganic salts. The IEC 60229 Igepal CO-630 solution test is the standard screening method for PE sheath ESCR performance.
TN Lab — Cable life is not determined by the conductor. Once the oversheath is breached, neither copper nor XLPE lasts long.
