IEC 60183:2015 provides a systematic guide for HV cable selection. Choosing a high-voltage cable involves far more than cross-sectional area — insulation type, installation method, earthing, and thermal environment collectively determine whether the cable survives its 30-year design life.
Four-step selection: (1) Voltage rating — Um must exceed system maximum voltage. Neutral earthing method matters: unearthed systems impose higher single-phase overvoltages on cables. (2) Insulation type — XLPE dominates today (90 °C normal / 250 °C short-circuit); EPR offers better flexibility for tight bending radii. (3) Conductor sizing — dual-check: ampacity + short-circuit thermal withstand. Thermal formula: S ≥ Ik × √t / K. (4) Oversheath — PE for general use, PVC for flame retardancy (but low-temperature brittleness risk), LSZH for tunnels and confined spaces.
Most common design error: Sizing by ampacity alone, neglecting short-circuit thermal verification. During a fault, conductor temperature can exceed 250 °C in seconds — causing irreversible XLPE insulation damage.
