IEC 60081 specifies double-capped fluorescent lamp dimensions: T5 (φ16 mm), T8 (φ26 mm), T12 (φ38 mm), with G5/G13 caps. This “soon-to-retire” standard has had a profound impact on the LED retrofit market.
The LED T8 retrofit dilemma: To make a drop-in LED T8 replacement, the cap must be G13 and the tube diameter must be 26 mm — all constrained by IEC 60081. But LEDs are point sources that do not need the gas-discharge cavity of a fluorescent lamp. The result: LED T8 tubes have half their internal volume as empty space — purely to satisfy IEC 60081 mechanical interchangeability.
A deeper issue: Does the LED T8 work with the original fluorescent ballast (Type A) or require ballast removal (Type B/C)? This compatibility problem stems from IEC 60081 defining ballast output characteristics, while LED drivers need fundamentally different input conditions.
