IEC 60067: Dimensions of Electronic Tubes — Standardization in the Vacuum Tube Era

Vacuum Tubes in 2026: Why High-Power RF Still Depends on a Century-Old Technology

IEC 60067 specifies electronic tube pin configurations and envelope dimensions. Semiconductors displaced tubes from consumer electronics long ago — but in high-power RF (broadcast transmitters, particle accelerators, industrial heating) and audiophile audio (guitar amplifiers, Hi-Fi), tubes remain active.

Why tubes persist: A single high-power tetrode (e.g., 4CX15000A) can deliver 15 kW continuous RF power at 30 kV anode voltage — with a single device. Achieving the same with solid-state requires hundreds of paralleled MOSFETs, introducing combining losses, current-sharing challenges, and reliability complexity. Above the 10 kW RF power threshold, tube TCO can still undercut solid-state.

Standardization value: IEC 60067 ensures that the same tube type from different manufacturers is interchangeable — critical for broadcast transmitter spare-parts supply chains.
