IEC 60065: Audio/Video Equipment Safety — The Bedrock of Consumer Electronics Safety

IEC 60065: The Safety Tests Your Television Passed Before Reaching Your Living Room

IEC 60065:2014 is the safety standard bedrock for consumer AV equipment — televisions, audio systems, DVD players. Your TV plugs safely into the wall because it passed every type test defined in this standard.

Four safety barriers: (1) Electric shock — Class I (earthed) vs. Class II (double-insulated). Creepage distances and clearances are the most common failure points. (2) Mechanical hazards — 10° tilt test (no tipping), ventilation opening finger test. (3) Thermal hazards — enclosure temperature rise limits under normal and fault conditions (plastic enclosures typically ≤60 K). (4) Fault testing — short-circuit each component one by one, verifying no fire. Transformer primary-to-secondary insulation is the single most common failure point.

Design tip: SMPS transformer primary-secondary creepage distance must be at least 6 mm (pollution degree 2, material group IIIb). If space is tight, mill a slot (width ≥1 mm) to increase effective creepage path length.
