SAE J2662 is a recommended practice intended to serve as a reference for the amount of torque that a power take-off (PTO) can induce on the transmission mounting pad. It applies to six-bolt, eight-bolt, and rear-mounted power take-offs. The purpose is to inform transmission designers about possible structural requirements of the transmission housing due to loading applied by the PTO and any auxiliary drive components. This standard, last stabilized in 2017, covers mature technology that is not likely to change soon.
The standard defines maximum output torque capacities for different PTO mounting pads. Additionally, it specifies overhung load limits to prevent excessive stress on the transmission housing.
| PTO Configuration | Max Output Torque | Overhung Load Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| Six-Bolt | 543 N·m (400 ft·lb) | 178 N (40 lb) at max 460 mm (18 in) from centerline |
| Eight-Bolt | 678 N·m (500 ft·lb) | |
| Rear-Mounted | 678 N·m (500 ft·lb) |
The torque values are in addition to any overhung loads supported by the PTO. Separating forces at the mounting pad must be calculated based on maximum PTO output torque and the speed ratio of the PTO and transmission.
⚠️ Important: If an overhung load exceeds 178 N (40 lb) or extends beyond 460 mm (18 in) from the transmission centerline, a support bracket must be attached to the transmission housing. Failure to do so may lead to housing damage.
When designing transmission housings, engineers must account for both torque loads and overhung loads. The housing should be designed to withstand the specified torque values: up to 543 N·m for six-bolt configurations and up to 678 N·m for eight-bolt and rear-mounted setups. Overhung loads up to 178 N at 460 mm can be supported without additional brackets, but beyond those limits, a bracket is required.
🛠️ Design Tip: Remember to separate the effects of torque and overhung loads. The torque capacities are for output torque; overhung loads are additional. Calculate separating forces using the maximum PTO output torque and speed ratio to ensure mounts can handle the stresses.
Six-bolt PTOs have a maximum limit of 543 N·m (400 ft·lb), while eight-bolt and rear-mounted PTOs are rated at 678 N·m (500 ft·lb).
A support bracket is needed if the load exceeds 178 N (40 lb) regardless of distance, or if the load is placed further than 460 mm (18 in) from the transmission centerline.
Separating forces should be calculated based on the maximum PTO output torque and the speed ratio between the PTO and transmission.
SAE J772 provides clearance envelopes for six-bolt, eight-bolt, and rear truck transmission mounted PTOs.
