SAE J680-2024: Location and Operation of Air Brake Controls in Motor Truck Cabs

1. Standard Scope and Rationale

This standard, reaffirmed in 2024, applies to on-highway trucks and truck-tractors with air brake systems and a GVWR of 26,000 lb or more. It focuses exclusively on the two primary air brake controls: the parking brake and the trailer air supply. While earlier versions provided guidance for all cab controls, the latest revision acknowledges modern wrap-around dashboards and displays, and directs designers to TMC RP401 for general control placement.

Scope Note: SAE J680-2024 does not cover instruments or other controls. For those, refer to TMC RP401.

2. Control Specifications, Design Insights, and Common Mistakes

The standard mandates distinct characteristics for each control to ensure easy identification and consistent operation.

Control Shape Color Required Labeling Operation
Parking Brake Diamond (rounded corners) Yellow PARKING BRAKE
Pull to Apply
Push to Release
Pull sets truck and trailer brakes; push releases truck brakes only.
Trailer Air Supply Octagon (rounded corners) Red TRAILER AIR
Pull to Evacuate
Push to Supply
Pull evacuates trailer brakes; push supplies air and releases trailer brakes.

Both controls are push-pull type and must be located to the right of the steering wheel in left-hand drive vehicles. Horizontal and vertical alignment should follow the diagrams in the standard (Figures 1 and 2). Manufacturers may optionally use text-free global symbols (Figure 3) in place of English labels.

Design Insight: The deliberate choice of yellow for parking brake and red for trailer air aligns with industry color conventions—yellow for caution/apply, red for emergency or stop. The diamond and octagon shapes provide tactile distinction even when the driver is not looking, which is crucial during high-stress situations. The push-pull motion is designed to be intuitive: pulling applies or evacuates, pushing releases or supplies. This consistency reduces training time and error rates.

Additionally, the requirement that the parking brake also sets the trailer brakes when pulled ensures that a single action can secure the entire vehicle combination, enhancing safety during parking or emergencies.

⚠️ Common Mistake: Using incorrect colors or shapes, such as a red parking brake knob or a round trailer air knob, can lead to operator confusion and safety risks. Always adhere to the specified yellow diamond and red octagon.

3. Frequently Asked Questions

Does the standard cover right-hand drive trucks?

The standard specifies location for left-hand drive vehicles. For right-hand drive, the controls should be placed symmetrically to the left of the steering wheel, maintaining the same relative positioning.

Can we use custom labeling or omit it?

The standard states the controls should be labeled with the specified text. However, it allows the use of global symbols (Figure 3) at the manufacturer’s option, which can replace text for international use.

What happens if I use a different shape or color?

Deviating from the required shape and color increases the risk of operator error, especially in emergencies. Compliance with J680 helps ensure safety and is often referenced by regulations. Non-compliance may lead to operational or liability issues.
