This article provides professional guidance based on SAE J800 (2009), a cancelled Recommended Practice that remains a valuable reference for installing aftermarket universal seat belt assemblies in vehicles that lack factory-installed restraints.
SAE J800 was first issued in 1960 when many vehicles were sold without seat belts. It provides general installation instructions for aftermarket, universal type seat belt assemblies in passenger cars, trucks, buses, and multipurpose passenger vehicles. The standard was cancelled in 2009 as most new vehicles now include seat belts, but it remains useful for installations in older vehicles that were not originally equipped.
When installing universal seat belt assemblies, the following parameters from SAE J800 should be observed.
| Fastener Type | Specification | Thread Options |
|---|---|---|
| Bolts (SAE/ASTM) | Grade 5 or higher | 7/16-20 UNF 2A, 1/2-13 UNC 2A, or metric equivalent |
| Bolts (Metric ISO) | Grade 8.8 or higher | ISO metric threads |
| Reinforcing Plates | Steel, at least 1.5 mm thick, min 2580 mm² area | Rounded edges and corners |
Attachment points should be spaced laterally equidistant from the seat centerline. In no case should both ends of one assembly be attached to the same anchorage point. Drill holes carefully to avoid damage to fuel lines, brake lines, and wiring. If the floor pan shows corrosion, add reinforcement beyond that supplied with the belt.
By following these guidelines from SAE J800, installers can ensure that aftermarket universal seat belts are fitted safely and effectively. Note that this standard is cancelled and should be used as a reference when no manufacturer instructions exist.
