IEC 60372: Insulator String Ball-Socket Locking Pins — The Tiniest Safety-Critical Component on Overhead Lines

A Sub-Cent Locking Pin Failure Can Scatter an Entire Insulator String

IEC 60372:1984 specifies ball-socket locking pin requirements for insulator strings. The locking pin (Split Pin or W-Clip) is the smallest, cheapest, yet most safety-critical component. It prevents ball disengagement — if it fractures from corrosion or vibration fatigue, the ball escapes, the entire string scatters, and the line faults to ground.
