IEC 60354: Power Transformer Overloading — Operating Limits Beyond Nameplate Ratings

How Much Can You Overload a Transformer? IEC 60354 Temperature and Ageing Models

IEC 60354:1991 specifies oil-immersed power transformer overloading guidance. Nameplate ratings assume continuous full load, 30°C ambient, normal life. Under low ambient temperature, short-duration overload, or preceding low load, transformers can safely exceed ratings — provided hot-spot temperature limits (140°C short-term emergency) are not exceeded.

TNLab — Transformer “ratings” are conservative standard values. Short-term overload is feasible under real conditions, but hot-spot temperature must be precisely calculated.
