IEC 60351-2: Oscilloscopes — From Analogue CRT to Digital Storage, the Technical Evolution

Oscilloscopes From 100MHz to 100GHz — The Dual Engine of Analogue Bandwidth and Sample Rate

IEC 60351-2:1976 specifies oscilloscope performance and testing. Oscilloscopes evolved from analogue CRT→DSO→MSO→real-time ≥100 GSa/s. Analogue bandwidth is determined by the front-end amplifier -3dB point; digital scopes must also satisfy Nyquist (fs>2×BW) — but in practice, due to non-ideal anti-alias filtering, fs>2.5–5×BW is typically needed.

TNLab — Oscilloscope bandwidth and sample rate are not “higher is better” — select based on signal rise time: BW≥0.35/trise.
