ASTM D6478 – 10 (Reapproved 2019) is a standardized test method under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D13 on Textiles. It provides a procedure for determining the specific packability of fabrics used in inflatable restraints (airbags). This index is critical for designing airbag modules where spatial constraints are paramount, as it quantifies the ability of a fabric to be uniformly folded and compacted under a defined compressive load sequence.
The test method evaluates fabric packability by requiring a precisely cut specimen to be folded uniformly in a “Z” pattern, first in the warp direction and subsequently in the fill direction. The folded specimen is then placed into a transparent confinement box that secures the pack during compression. Consistent folding is the single most important factor for repeatable results, necessitating the use of the standardized technique provided in the ASTM adjuncts.
| ⚡ Technical Parameter | 📐 Specification / Requirement |
|---|---|
| Conditioning Atmosphere | 21 ± 1 °C, 65 ± 2 % RH (per D1776) |
| Fold Pattern | Uniform Z-fold, Warp direction first, then Fill direction |
| Confinement Box | Transparent rigid box (see detailed drawings ADJD6478) |
| Compression Device | Tensile/Compression tester with specialized compression hardware |
| Measured Data | Thickness (mm) of compressed pack at each specified load |
Following conditioning, the prepared fabric fold is placed in the confinement box. The box is positioned under the load cell, and compression is applied in a specific load sequence. The thickness of the pack is recorded at each specified load increment. The standard heavily emphasizes operator training, as the folding technique is difficult to describe in writing but is critical for accuracy.
The Specific Packability Index (SPI) is calculated by summing the volumes of the fabric pack at each compression load. Volume at each cell is derived from the confinement box internal area and the recorded thickness. The sequence of loads and a sample calculation are shown below. A lower index indicates a fabric that packs into a smaller volume under load.
| 💡 Load Cell (N) | 🎯 Recorded Thickness (mm) | 📏 Calculated Volume¹ (cm³) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 40.0 | 400.0 |
| 20 | 30.0 | 300.0 |
| 40 | 25.0 | 250.0 |
| 80 | 20.0 | 200.0 |
| 160 | 18.0 | 180.0 |
| Specific Packability Index | 1330.0 cm³ | |
