D6217-21 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Scope and Fuel Applicability

This test method, designated D6217-21, covers the determination of the mass of particulate contamination in middle distillate fuels by laboratory filtration. It is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D02 and is directly responsible to Subcommittee D02.14. This test method is suitable for No. 1 and No. 2 grades in Specifications D396, D975, D2880, and D3699, as well as grades DMA and DMB in Specification D2069. It is not suitable for fuels with flash points less than 38°C as determined by Test Methods D56, D93, or D3828 due to static electricity ignition risks. This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization.

Note: No. 1 and No. 2 grades in D396 or D975 currently allow up to 5% biodiesel meeting Specification D6751. Samples containing biodiesel can result in partial dissolution or compromise of membrane filters and give erroneous results.

🟦 Fuel Specification 🎯 Applicable Grades
D396No. 1 and No. 2
D975No. 1 and No. 2
D2880No. 1 and No. 2
D3699No. 1 and No. 2
D2069DMA and DMB
⚡ Middle distillate fuels with flash points less than 38°C have been ignited by discharges of static electricity when filtered through inadequately bonded or grounded membrane filter systems. Refer to Guide D4865 for more details on static electricity formation and discharge.

⚙️ Test Procedure and Precision

The test procedure involves filtering a 1 L sample of fuel through a membrane filter to capture particulate contamination. The filter is weighed to determine the mass of contamination. The precision of this test method is applicable to particulate contaminant levels between 0 g/m³ to 25 g/m³ provided that the 1 L sample is filtered completely. Higher levels of particulate contaminant can be measured but are subject to uncertain precision. All values are stated in SI units, and users must establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices.

Key referenced flash point test methods include D56, D93, and D3828. For alternative methods for aviation fuels, see Test Methods D2276 and D5452.

📏 Particulate Level 🎯 Precision Note
0 to 25 g/m³Valid precision with complete filtration of 1 L samples
Above 25 g/m³Uncertain precision; measurable but not validated
💡 This test method has not been validated for testing biodiesel (e.g., Specification D6751) or blends. Test Method D7321 is suitable for B100 and all blends of middle distillates and biodiesel.
