This standard specifies requirements for multipurpose test specimens used for testing plastics, particularly for injection or compression molding materials. It is identical to ISO 3167 and provides a standardized approach for evaluating material properties.
This standard specifies requirements for multipurpose test specimens used for plastic molding materials processed by injection or compression molding. It covers Types A and B specimens, which are tensile test specimens designed for wide utility. From these specimens, with simple machining, specimens for various other tests can be taken, as listed in Table 1 of the standard.
| 🟦 Specimen Type | 📏 Overall Length | 📐 End Width | 🎯 Narrow Section Width | ⚡ Thickness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Type A | 150 mm | 20 mm | 10 mm | 4 mm |
| Type B | 75 mm | 10 mm | 5 mm | 2 mm |
The dimensions ensure that specimens can be used for a variety of tests including tensile, flexural, and impact properties, providing comparable moldings for coherent property measurement.
The principal advantage of multipurpose test specimens is that they allow all tests mentioned in Table 1 to be carried out on the basis of comparable moldings. Consequently, the measured properties are coherent as they are measured with specimens in the same state. This minimizes variability due to unintentionally different molding conditions.
For quality control purposes, the multipurpose test specimen serves as a convenient source of further specimens not readily available. The fact that only one mold is required may be advantageous. However, the use of these specimens shall be agreed upon by the interested parties because there may be significant differences between properties of the multipurpose test specimens and those specified in the relevant test methods.
This standard is identical to ISO 3167, ensuring international consistency. It does not purport to address all safety concerns, and it is the responsibility of the user to establish appropriate safety and health practices prior to use.
The main advantage is that all tests can be carried out on comparable moldings, ensuring coherent property measurement. It also allows for easy assessment of the influence of molding conditions or different states of the specimens.
This standard defines Types A and B tensile test specimens, which can be used for a variety of other tests after simple machining.
Yes, they are suitable for quality control purposes as they provide a convenient source of further specimens and require only one mold.
