The D5884/D5884M – 23 standard establishes a uniform procedure for evaluating the tearing strength of flexible geomembranes internally reinforced with a textile. Utilizing the tongue tear method, this test measures the maximum force required to propagate a tear along a defined path, providing essential data for material characterization and quality assurance.
This test method applies to flexible geomembranes that are internally reinforced with a textile layer, such as a woven or nonwoven scrim. The tearing strength is determined by measuring the maximum load required to tear a specially cut specimen. The tongue tear geometry involves a specimen with two distinct tabs, allowing the tear to propagate across the width of the material. Testing must be conducted in both the machine direction (MD) and the cross-machine direction (CMD) to capture the anisotropic nature of the reinforced composite.
Prior to testing, all specimens must be conditioned in a standard atmosphere for testing geosynthetics: a relative humidity between 50 to 70 % and a temperature of 21 ± 2 °C [70 ± 4 °F].

|---|---|
| Standard Designation | D5884 / D5884M – 23 |
| Material Scope | Flexible, Internally Reinforced Geomembranes |
| Test Geometry | Tongue Tear (Two-Tab) |
| Testing Orientations | Machine Direction (MD) & Cross-Machine Direction (CMD) |
The testing apparatus consists of a constant-rate-of-extension (CRE) tensile testing machine with grip assemblies, a load-indicating system, and a drive mechanism. The two separated tabs of the conditioned specimen are clamped securely in the grips, which are then separated at a
