D5860-95 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

ASTM D5860-95 (Reapproved 2022) is a standardized test method for evaluating the comparative effect of water repellent treatments on the freeze-thaw resistance of hydraulic cement mortar specimens. This laboratory screening method assists in treatment selection but may not accurately reflect field performance due to its controlled conditions.

📐 Specimen Geometry and Preparation

Test specimens are 50 mm (2 in.) mortar cubes prepared according to Test Method C109/C109M. These cubes must be greater than 28 days old to ensure proper hydration. Prior to treatment, specimens are cleaned using a wire brush or light sand blasting to remove any form oil or release agent, ensuring uniform adhesion of the water repellent treatment.

Consistent surface cleaning is essential for reliable test results; avoid over-brushing that may damage the mortar surface.

⚙️ Test Procedure and Apparatus

Mortar cubes are treated with water repellent by immersion in a corrosion-resistant pan or surface application, allowed to cure, and air dried. Weighed specimens are subjected to freeze-thaw cycles in a chamber at -19.2 ± 1.4 °C. Periodic weighing and visual inspections are conducted to monitor weight loss, spalling, and cracking. Required apparatus include a balance (≥400 g, 0.1 g sensitivity), freezing chamber, forced draft oven (110 ± 5 °C), weight per litre cup for density measurement, stiff-nylon-bristled brush, and corrosion-resistant metal pan.
