ASTM D5750/D5750M-95 (Reapproved 2020) provides a standardized guide for specifying the width and length of general-purpose pressure-sensitive tape. This guide is critical for aligning expectations between suppliers and users by defining modular measurement systems, tolerances, and labeling practices. It applies to pressure-sensitive tapes in roll form equal to or greater than 12 in. (0.305 m) in length, excluding tapes intended for medical, surgical, or label stock purposes.
The standard establishes distinct modular systems for stating roll widths. When the inch-pound system is the primary measurement system, the increments are defined by specific width ranges. The corresponding SI width is calculated and rounded to the nearest 0.1 mm.
| 🟦 Roll Width (Inch-Pound Primary) | 📏 Modular Increment | 🎯 Secondary Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Under 1 in | 1/8 in | SI width rounded to 0.1 mm |
| 1 in to 2 in | 1/4 in | SI width rounded to 0.1 mm |
| Over 2 in | 1/2 in | SI width rounded to 0.1 mm |
Conversely, when the SI system is the primary measurement system, the modular increments are defined in millimetres, and the inch-pound width is calculated and rounded to the nearest 0.01 in.
| 🟦 Roll Width (SI Primary) | 📏 Modular Increment | 🎯 Secondary Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Under 24 mm | 3 mm | Inch width rounded to 0.01 in |
| 24 mm to 48 mm | 6 mm | Inch width rounded to 0.01 in |
| Over 48 mm | 12 mm | Inch width rounded to 0.01 in |
All widths and lengths must be stated using a primary system and a secondary calculated system. The width shall be stated in inches or millimetres, and the length shall be stated in yards or metres. For rolls 72 yd (2592 in.) and under, the length may be stated directly in inches.
To ensure conformance, the average width of all rolls in any shipment or offering must equal or exceed the stated nominal width. Following this guide is recommended for contracts, orders, and labeling to reduce the chances of misunderstanding between suppliers and users.
Understanding the specific terminology in the standard is essential. A pressure-sensitive tape is a pressure-sensitive adhesive coated substrate in roll form wound on a core. The roll length is defined as the length of tape on a roll minus the tab and any tape on the core which cannot be removed and used for the intended purpose (Section 3.1.2).
| 📌 Specification Element | 📏 Inch-Pound System | 📏 SI System |
|---|---|---|
| Unit of Width | Inches | Millimetres |
| Unit of Length | Yards (or inches for ≤ 72 yd) | Metres |
| Width Modular Increments | 1/8 in, 1/4 in, 1/2 in | 3 mm, 6 mm, 12 mm |
| Secondary Calculation Tolerance | Rounded to nearest 0.1 mm | Rounded to nearest 0.01 in |
This guide covers guidelines for widths and lengths of pressure-sensitive tape, including tolerances and labeling in both the inch-pound and SI systems. It is not intended for tapes used for medical, surgical, or label stock purposes.
Roll widths are stated in a modular system with 1/8 in increments for widths under 1 in, 1/4 in increments for widths between 1 and 2 in, and 1/2 in increments for widths over 2 in.
Roll length is defined as the length of tape on a roll minus the tab and any tape on the core which cannot be removed and used for the intended purpose (Section 3.1.2).
In any shipment or offering of tape, the average width of all rolls must equal or exceed the stated width. It is also recommended to avoid interchanging the inch-pound and SI units, as they are not exact equivalents and each system must be used independently.
