D5727 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

ASTM D5727/D5727M-00 (Reapproved 2023), developed under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D08 on Roofing and Waterproofing, defines the standard specification for mineral-colloid-stabilized, concentrated, emulsified refined coal tar. This specification, which supersedes the former Federal Specification RP355, is specifically intended for weather-protective and aliphatic-solvent resistant coatings over bituminous pavements, such as those found at airports, parking areas, and driveways.

🛡️ Material Specifications and Composition

Section 3 of the standard dictates that the emulsion must be manufactured using tars with a viscosity of RT-11 or higher, conforming to the requirements of Specification D490. The emulsion must be a mineral colloid type and may be fortified with antifreeze when specified by the purchaser. The standard explicitly requires that values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units be regarded separately and used independently to avoid nonconformance.

🟦 Material Component 📏 Specification Requirement ⚡ Governing Standard
Refined Coal Tar Base RT-11 Viscosity or Higher ASTM D490
Emulsifying Agent Mineral Colloid Type Section 1.1 / D5727
Antifreeze Additive Fortified When Specified Section 3.2

📐 Physical Requirements and Test Methods

The emulsion must be homogeneous, exhibiting no separation or coagulation that cannot be overcome by moderate stirring. The material is evaluated against physical properties prescribed in Table 1 of the standard, using the procedures outlined in Test Methods D2939 and D95. Note that the concentrated emulsion must be diluted after
