These test methods cover the particle size and mass analysis of natural and man-made riprap and related materials, including filter stone or coarse bedding materials. These methods are generally intended for riprap and related materials and are applicable for mixtures of stones screened from natural deposits, blast rock, processed materials from quarried rock, or recycled concrete. They are applicable for sizes 3 in. (75 mm) and above, with the upper size limited only by equipment available for handling and determining the mass of the individual particles. Four alternate procedures are provided, and specifiers must indicate the test procedure used.
All observed and calculated values shall conform to the guidelines for significant digits and rounding established in Practice D6026. For purposes of comparing measured or calculated value(s) with specified limits, the measured or calculated value(s) shall be rounded to the nearest decimal or significant digits in the specified limits. The procedures used are regarded as the industry standard. The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard, with SI units in parentheses for information only. The gravitational system of inch-pound units is used, where the pound (lbf) represents a unit of force (weight), and the unit for mass is slugs.
The test methods focus on particle size distribution and mass of individual particles. The following tables summarize the test procedures and referenced standards.

The standard provides test methods for particle size and mass analysis of natural and man-made riprap and related materials, including filter stone or coarse bedding materials, for sizes 3 in. (75 mm) and above.
The methods are applicable for mixtures of stones from natural deposits, blast rock, processed quarried rock, or recycled concrete.
Values must conform to Practice D6026, with rounding to the nearest decimal or significant digits in specified limits. The procedures are industry standards, but users may adjust based on material variation and objectives.
The standard does not address all safety concerns. Users should establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine applicable regulatory limitations. Specific precautions are given in Section 7.
