ASTM D5445-21, formally designated “Standard Practice for Pictorial Markings for Handling of Goods,” establishes a comprehensive system of symbols for marking packages and containers to communicate special handling and storage requirements. Approved for use by U.S. Department of Defense agencies, this practice is crucial for international trade, where language barriers often impede proper cargo handling. Section 4 elaborates on its significance, highlighting that written instructions in the country of origin are ineffective for goods shipped to or through countries using different languages, or when handlers are illiterate. Pictorial symbols provide the most reliable method for conveying the consignor’s intentions, directly reducing the likelihood of loss and damage resulting from incorrect handling. The standard explicitly reminds users that proper protective packaging remains the primary defense, and these symbols supplement, but do not guarantee, satisfactory handling.
The scope of this practice (Section 1) covers the establishment of symbols and their specifications. All values stated in SI units are regarded as the standard. This international standard was developed in accordance with the principles on standardization established by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
D5445-21 provides specific technical requirements for the implementation of pictorial markings to ensure uniformity and visibility across all package types. Regarding display (Section 5.1), symbols may appear on labels or be printed directly onto the package using stenciling, painting, or preprinted methods. A critical rule dictates that affirmative symbols do not require a border, while all negative symbols (e.g., “DO NOT …”) must be enclosed in a border line with a slash mark across the design. For stenciling, bars may be provided if required per Appendix X1.
Color specifications (Section 5.2) dictate that black is the preferred standard. A panel of a suitable contrasting color, preferably white, must be provided if the package color obscures the symbol. The color red is permitted when increased emphasis is needed to focus handler attention, but care must be taken to avoid confusion with the labeling of dangerous goods. Suggested symbol sizes (Section 5.3) are 100, 150, or 200 mm (4, 6, or 8 inches), which can be scaled proportionately based on the package dimensions. Section 5.4 emphasizes using only the markings required for the specific package.
| 🟦 Element | 📏 Standard Specification | 🎯 Application Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Symbol Color | Black | Standard for all general markings. |
| Emphasis Color | Red | Only for increased attention. Avoid confusion with dangerous goods labels. |
| Background Contrast | Contrasting color panel (pref. white) | Required if symbol visibility is compromised by package color. |
| Standard Suggested Sizes | 100, 150, 200 mm (4, 6, 8 in.) | Scale proportionately to fit package dimensions. |
| Negative Symbol Format | Border with diagonal slash mark | Mandatory for all prohibitive “DO NOT…” symbols. |
