D5436-15 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Scope and Classification

This specification, ASTM D5436-15 (Reapproved 2020), governs cast poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) rods, tubes, and shapes. It applies strictly to materials produced by casting or machining cast blanks and explicitly excludes heat-formed, molded, extruded, or assembled components. The standard classifies materials by optical properties and surface finish into two types and two finishes:

• Type UVA: Material having ultraviolet-light-absorbing properties as defined in the standard’s Table 1.
• Type UVT: Material not subject to the specific light-absorbing requirements applied to Type UVA.
• Finish 1: Rods, tubes, and shapes with a smooth surface finish obtained by casting or high polishing.
• Finish 2: Rods, tubes, and shapes with a rough, unfinished surface which may be frosted, abraded,
