D5396-04 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Classification of Reclaimed Perchloroethylene

ASTM D5396-04 specifies reclaimed perchloroethylene for noncritical industrial applications such as metal cleaning. It is not recommended for dry cleaning, which is covered by Specification D4081. The standard defines three types based on precision requirements:

  • Type I – For precision applications.
  • Type II – For less demanding precision applications.
  • Type III – General-purpose technical grade.

All types must meet the identical property requirements outlined in Table 1.

⚙️ Required Properties and Testing Methods

Reclaimed perchloroethylene must comply with the properties in Table 1, determined via ASTM test methods:

  • Color per Test Method D2108 (Platinum-Cobalt Scale).
  • Specific Gravity per Test Methods D2111.
  • Nonvolatile Matter per Test Methods D2109.
  • Water Content per Test Methods D3401 or Test Method E1064.
  • Acidity-Alkalinity per Test Method D2989.
  • Total Acid Acceptance per Test Method D2942.
  • Water-Soluble Halide Ion per Test Methods D2988.
  • Appearance per Test Methods D3741.

Purity analysis can be conducted using Gas Chromatography per Practice D6806.

📊 Specification Requirements

Table 1 summarizes the mandatory specification limits for reclaimed perchloroethylene Types I, II, and III.
