D5350-95 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📘 Scope and Significance

ASTM D5350 −95 (Reapproved 2019) describes the determination of organically combined sulfuric anhydride in sulfated oils. The method involves boiling the sample with sulfuric acid and titrating the reaction mixture. It is derived from Test Methods D500, Sections 15 through 19. Values stated in SI units are regarded as standard.

⚙️ Apparatus and Reagents

The apparatus requires a 300 mL borosilicate Erlenmeyer flask with a glass stopper. This connects via a ground joint to a glass air condenser measuring 915 mm (36 in.) in length and 8 mm (5/16 in.) in outside diameter. Perforated glass beads, 4 mm in diameter, are critical to prevent bumping.
