This specification covers the grade of cyclohexane identified as “cyclohexane 999” in accordance with ASTM D5309-22. The standard defines the required purity, maximum allowable impurities, and physical properties. For conformance, all observed or calculated values must be rounded off to the nearest unit in the last right-hand digit of the specified limit, following the rounding-off method of Practice E29.
Sampling of cyclohexane must be performed according to Practice D3437. The following table summarizes the key property requirements and the corresponding ASTM test methods:
| 🟦 Property | 🎯 Specification | ⚡ Test Method |
|---|---|---|
| Purity, min, weight % | 99.90 | D7266 or D7871 |
| Benzene, max, mg/kg | 50 | D7266 or D7871 |
| n-Hexane, max, mg/kg | 200 | D7266 or D7871 |
| Methylcyclohexane, max, mg/kg | 200 | D7266 or D7871 |
| Methylcyclopentane, max, mg/kg | 150 | D7266 or D7871 |
| Sulfur, max, mg/kg | 1 | D7183 |
| Appearance (free of haze, particulates, or suspended matter) | Pass | E2680 |
| Color, max, Platinum/Cobalt scale | 10 | D5386 or D8005 |
| Distillation range, max, °C (including 80.7°C at 101.3 kPa) | 1.0 | D850 |
Additionally, the distillation range must include the temperature 80.7 °C at 101.3 kPa (760 mmHg) pressure, with a maximum range of 1.0 °C.
The minimum purity is 99.90% by weight, as determined by gas chromatography methods D7266 or D7871.
Sampling must be done in accordance with Practice D3437, which covers sampling and handling of liquid cyclic products.
Benzene content is determined using Test Methods D7266 or D7871, with a maximum allowable concentration of 50 mg/kg.
The maximum sulfur content is 1 mg/kg, as measured by Test Method D7183 using ultraviolet fluorescence.
