This test method, ASTM D5233-92 (Reapproved 2023), specifies the single batch extraction procedure for solid wastes or sludges to evaluate leaching potential. The extract obtained is used to measure analyte concentrations for pass/fail comparisons against set acceptance levels. The test may be omitted if total analysis confirms the absence of target analytes or if acceptance levels cannot be exceeded (Section 1.3). Furthermore, if any liquid fraction of the extract exhibits a concentration equal to or greater than the acceptance level, the waste is considered failed without the need for further analysis (Section 1.4).
The batch extraction method is designed primarily for non-volatile analytes under the test conditions. Although volatile analytes can be detected, the extract must not be used for determining volatile organic analytes (Section 1.6). The procedure does not detail all sampling and analytical requirements; users are responsible for establishing appropriate practices (Section 1.7). Values are reported in SI or inch-pound units as per the standard (Section 1.8). Safety precautions are necessary, and users should refer to Note 8 for specific guidance (Section 1.9).
The following table outlines the key conditions for applying this test method, based on the standard’s scope.
| 🟦 Condition | 📐 Required Action |
|---|---|
| Total analysis shows no target analytes | Test not required (1.3) |
| Acceptance levels cannot possibly be exceeded | Test not required (1.3) |
| Liquid fraction concentration ≥ acceptance level | Waste fails immediately (1.4) |
| Volatile analyte detected | Waste fails if acceptance level exceeded (1.6) |
| Volatile organic analytes | Extract unsuitable for determination (1.6) |
Additionally, the standard references several ASTM practices for sampling and analysis, as listed below.

It provides a single batch extraction method to assess the leaching potential of wastes, helping to determine if analyte concentrations exceed acceptance levels.
If total analysis shows no target analytes or if acceptance levels cannot be exceeded, the test is not required (Section 1.3).
If any liquid fraction has a concentration equal to or above the acceptance level, the waste fails immediately without further analysis (Section 1.4).
The extract should not be used for volatile organic analytes; however, if detected, failure is determined based on acceptance levels (Section 1.6).
