D5164-05 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📋 Scope, Referenced Documents, and Property Requirements

The ASTM D5164-05 (Reapproved 2019) standard provides the material property requirements, test methods, and packaging guidelines for Propylene Glycol and Dipropylene Glycol used primarily in the preparation of surface coatings. Under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, this specification establishes critical quality benchmarks to ensure performance consistency.

All values in this specification are stated in SI units. A critical requirement for determining conformance is that observed or calculated values must be rounded “to the nearest unit” in the last right-hand digit of the specification limit, in accordance with the rounding method of Practice E29. Specific hazard information should be obtained from the supplier’s Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). This standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established by the WTO TBT Committee.

Key referenced ASTM standards include Test Methods E202 (Analysis of Glycols), Practices E300 (Sampling of Industrial Chemicals), and color test methods D1209 and D5386.

⚙️ Sampling, Test Methods, and Packaging Guidelines

Proper sampling of the material must be performed in accordance with Practice E300. The properties defined in the specification, such as assay, water, acidity, and specific gravity, are primarily determined using the procedures outlined in Test Methods E202. The density or apparent specific gravity can alternatively be determined using Test Method D4052 with a digital density meter.

For packaging, the package size is agreed upon between the purchaser and the supplier. The packaging itself must conform to applicable carrier rules and regulations or, when specified by the contract, to U.S. Federal Specification PPP-C-2020 for the packaging of industrial chemicals.

💡 Technical Tip: When performing conformity assessments, rounding must follow Practice E29. For example, if the specification limit is 0.5 wt%, an observed value of 0.45% rounds down to 0.5%, meeting the specification, while 0.55% rounds up to 0.6%, which does not conform.
