D5102 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Specimen Geometry and Testing Procedures

ASTM D5102/D5102M-24 defines two distinct methods for preparing, curing, and testing compacted soil-lime mixtures. The selection of Procedure A or Procedure B depends on the required height-to-diameter ratio and the intended application of the compressive strength results.

🟦 Feature 📐 Procedure A (Standard) 📏 Procedure B (Relative)
Height-to-Diameter Ratio 2.00 to 2.50 1.15 (D698 molds)
Compaction Equipment Static or impact frames Test Methods D698 equipment
Strength Designation Standard measure of UCS Relative measure in a test suite
Typical Strength Outcome Standard baseline Normally higher than Procedure A
Cross-Comparison Not applicable Not directly comparable to Proc. A

Specimens are usually prepared at maximum dry unit weight and optimum water content, but other target levels are permitted. Cored specimens are explicitly excluded and must be tested in accordance with Test Methods D2166/D2166M (Section 1.2).
