ASTM Standard D5098-16 (Reapproved 2021) establishes comprehensive requirements for artists’ acrylic dispersion paints. The scope explicitly covers composition, physical properties, performance, and labeling requirements for pigments, vehicles, and additives. Mandated performance criteria include pigment identification, lightfastness, bleeding, consistency, and drying time. Per Section 1.4, all values stated in SI units are regarded as standard. This international standard was developed in accordance with the WTO TBT Committee principles for international standardization.
A core requirement of D5098 is the strict evaluation of lightfastness. Pigments must meet the grades defined within the standard; Table 1 lists some pigments that meet these lightfastness requirements. For other pigments, specific instructions for test specimen preparation are provided, with Test Methods D4303 referenced for determining relative lightfastness. Colorants are identified using the international Colour Index system, which includes an official Colour Index Name and a specific Colour Index Number describing the chemical constitution.
| 🟦 Colour Index Term | 📏 Standard Reference | 📖 Definition / Example |
|---|---|---|
| Colour Index Name | Section 3.1.1 | Category, general hue, and assigned number (e.g., Pigment Blue 15) |
| Colour Index Number | Section 3.1.2 | Five-digit chemical constitution number (e.g., 74160) |
| Lightfastness Grade | D4303 / Table 1 | Meets the lightfastness requirements of the specification |
The specification mandates specific test methods to verify performance. The fineness of dispersion is evaluated using a Hegman-type gage per Test Method D1210. Bleeding of pigments is assessed following Test Methods D279. Drying, curing, or film formation is tested according to ASTM D1640. The standard also references practices for qualitative identification of polymers in the emulsion paint (D3168) and preparation of drawdowns for evaluation (D4941).
| ⚙️ Property | 🔬 Test Method | 🎯 Key Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Lightfastness | D4303 | Must meet the lightfastness categories defined in the standard |
| Bleeding | D279 | No unacceptable staining or migration |
| Fineness of Dispersion | D1210 | Evaluated with a Hegman-type gage |
| Drying Time | D1640 | Determines film formation characteristics |
| Health Hazard Labeling | D4236 | Required for chronic health hazard communication |
Section 3.2.1 defines it as a paint containing a stable aqueous dispersion of polymers or copolymers of acrylic acid.
Pigments must be identified using their Colour Index Name (e.g., Pigment Blue 15) and Colour Index Number (e.g., 74160) from the internationally accepted Colour Index system.
The standard references Test Methods D4303 for determining the relative lightfastness of colorants. Table 1 provides a list of pigments that already meet the lightfastness requirements.
Art materials must be labeled in accordance with Practice D4236 to communicate chronic health hazards to users and ensure compliance with health regulations.
