This test method provides two procedures for measuring voids in adhesives between materials in roofing and waterproofing systems. Voids are defined as adhesive defects with at least one dimension equal to or larger than 13 mm [0.5 in.]; smaller defects are excluded. Classification includes dry, glazed, uncoated, and overlying voids per Terminology D1079. The values stated in SI or inch-pound units shall be used independently without combining.
| 🟦 Void Classification | 📏 Description |
|---|---|
| Dry | Lack of adhesive in the void area |
| Glazed | Shiny, glazed surface appearance |
| Uncoated | Area without coating material |
| Overlying | Void between overlapping layers |
All voids meeting the size criterion are counted and measured. The void area in each adhesive layer is estimated using a void estimating template or digitized with a computer. Required apparatus includes a freezer for sample conditioning, transparent sheets for recording void locations, a flow pen for marking, and a stiff transparent template of 305 mm² [12 in.²] with a 25.4 mm [1 in.] minimum grid.
| 🛠️ Equipment | ⚡ Specification |
|---|---|
| Freezer | Standard freezer, ample volume, exclusive use for samples |
| Transparent Sheets | Clear rigid sheets, markable with flow pen |
| Flow Pen | Compatible marking device |
| Void Estimating Template | 305 mm² area, 25.4 mm minimum grid |
In multi-ply systems, voids between felt plies or membrane and insulation can become seeds for future blisters. In one-ply systems, voids in lap adhesives may cause leakage, while voids in adhered membrane insulation can also lead to blisters. This laboratory test method supports quality control and failure analysis, referencing ASTM standards D1079 and D2829/D2829M.
A void is an adhesive defect with at least one dimension ≥ 13 mm [0.5 in.]; smaller defects are not considered voids.
Using a transparent template with a 25.4 mm [1 in.] grid or by computer digitization, counting only voids that meet the size criterion.
Voids can lead to blister formation in multi-ply systems or leakage in one-ply systems, compromising membrane integrity.
A freezer, transparent sheets, a flow pen, and a void estimating template with 305 mm² area and 25.4 mm grid are mandatory.
