ASTM D5031-23 is the definitive standard practice for accelerated exposure testing of paints and related coatings using the enclosed carbon-arc apparatus. This practice specifies a framework for selecting test conditions, preparing specimens, and evaluating results. It functions as a product-specific guide that operates under the broader protocols of Practices G151 and G153.

Per its defined scope, this standard covers only enclosed carbon-arc exposures. It explicitly does not cover filtered open-flame exposures (Practice D822) or the more severe unfiltered open-flame exposures (Practice D3361/D3361M). As noted in the standard, the unfiltered open-flame arc produces shorter wavelengths and higher levels of short-wavelength radiation than filtered or enclosed arcs, and it requires specific automatic humidity control.
