ASTM D5029-98 (Reapproved 2020) describes a standardized reflux extraction technique for determining the water-soluble content of unused granular and powdered activated carbons. The quantity of these soluble materials provides a relative indication of the leachable components that can influence the ash, conductivity, and pH of the finished product.
This test method applies exclusively to unused granular and powdered activated carbons. Water solubles are defined as materials that can be extracted by distilled water under reflux conditions and are expressed as a percentage of the dry carbon weight. The apparatus required is highly specific to ensure reproducibility, including a 250 mL Erlenmeyer flask with a 24/40 standard taper (ST) neck and a condenser with a matching 24/40 inner ST joint. F
