📜 Scope and Application

ASTM D5019-07a establishes the standard specification for reinforced non-vulcanized polymeric sheets made from Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene (CSM). These sheets are intended for use as single-ply roof membranes exposed to the weather. The sheet is reinforced with fiber or fabric.

At the time of installation, the polymer exhibits thermoplastic characteristics. The chlorosulfonated polyethylene will subsequently vulcanize in place under ambient conditions. The values stated in SI units are regarded as the standard.

Important in-place roof system design criteria such as fire resistance, field seaming strength, impact resistance, and uplift resistance are beyond the scope of this material specification.

🏗️ Material Classification and Composition

The standard defines a single polymer type and two construction grades to classify the reinforced sheet accurately.

🟦 Designation 📋 Specification Requirements
Type I (Polymer) Chlorosulfonated Polyethylene (CSM). The coating must contain a minimum of 90% CSM relative to the total polymer content.
Grade 1 (Construction) Sheet is backed with fibers.
Grade 2 (Construction) Sheet is internally reinforced with fabric.
💡 Technical Insight: A general description of the reinforcing material, including the type of fiber used and the weight per unit area, must be provided upon request (Section 3.3). The non-vulcanized thermoplastic nature of the sheet facilitates heat-welded seams during installation, with full vulcanization occurring naturally over time in the field.

To characterize the sheet, the standard specifies minimum property limits determined by rigorous ASTM test methods. These methods cover mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and environmental resistance.
