D4910 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

📐 Scope and Application of ASTM D4910

ASTM D4910/D4910M – 23´1 provides standardized tables of body measurements specifically for infants ranging from Preemie to 24 months. These values serve as a foundational baseline for the apparel industry, enabling designers and manufacturers to create garments that accommodate fabric type, ease for body movement, styling, and fit. The standard applies equally to body measurements for both boys and girls.

The tables were meticulously developed using data from the National Center for Health Statistics and the 2014 CDC Growth Charts for the United States. Abrupt shifts in proportion were eliminated to reflect the gradual growth and development of an infant. To verify the proposed measurements, Alvanon Inc. created a three-dimensional avatar for visual reference, including variants for straight and bent legs, as well as a built-in diaper option for 3D virtual prototyping.

⚠ Key Requirement – Unit Segregation: Per Section 1.3 of the standard, the values stated in SI units and inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. These values are not exact equivalents. To ensure conformance with the standard, each system must be used independently of the other without combining values in any way.

📊 Key Body Measurement Tables for Infant Sizes

The following tables summarize the primary body dimensions as defined in the standard. These cover the complete size range and provide the critical baseline measurements required for apparel design and pattern grading.
