ASTM D4829-21 defines the standard test method for determining the Expansion Index (EI) of soils. This index provides a qualitative measure of the swelling potential of a soil when inundated with distilled water. It is designed as a simple, sensitive index parameter for practical engineering evaluation rather than a direct design parameter for calculating expansion magnitudes.
Per Section 1.1, this test method determines the expansion potential of soils. The resulting Expansion Index (EI) is a qualitative index property that serves as an indication of swelling potential for practical engineering applications. The test is simple yet sensitive, making it highly suitable for field classification and preliminary geotechnical assessments.
The standard adheres to a strict unit hierarchy. SI units are regarded as standard, while inch-pound units in parentheses are provided for information only. The standard employs the gravitational system of inch-pound units, where the pound (lbf) represents a unit of force and the slug is the unit of mass. Section 1.3.3 clarifies that the use of balances recording pounds of mass (lbm) or density in lbm/ft³ shall not be regarded as nonconformance, even though the standard uses the gravitational system.
Furthermore, density is presented only in SI units. After the density has been determined, unit weight is calculated in either SI or inch-pound units. This distinction is critical for accurate data reporting per Section 1.3.4.
All observed and calculated values must conform to Practice D6026 for significant digits and rounding. For comparison against specified limits, measured or calculated values must be rounded to the nearest decimal of significant digits in the specified limit. As an index test, the method provides an industry-standard procedure for data collection and does not consider specific material variation or calculation of actual expansion magnitudes.
| 📐 Feature | 🟦 SI Standard | ⚖️ Inch-Pound System | 📝 Conformance Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit System Type | Absolute (SI) | Gravitational | SI is the standard system per 1.3 |
| Force Unit | N (Newton) | lbf (pound-force) | lbf is the official force unit |
| Mass Unit | kg (kilogram) | slug (mass) | Scales recording lbm are allowed per 1.3.3 |
| Density vs. Unit Weight | Density (kg/m³) provided directly | Unit Weight (lb/ft³) calculated from density | Terms distinctly defined per Section 1.3.4 |
The EI measures a qualitative index property of the soil’s swelling potential. It characterizes expansion upon inundation with distilled water, but it is not a direct design parameter for calculating exact expansion amounts.
Yes. Per Section 1.3, reporting test results in units other than SI shall not be regarded as nonconformance with this standard, provided the test itself is conducted correctly.
No. Section 1.3.3 explicitly states that the use of balances and
