The ASTM D4786-00 (Reapproved 2024) standard specifically defines the methodology for determining the stitch-tearing strength of leather when a tear originates from a single hole. This test method is intended for rating heavy leathers and has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S. Department of Defense. The following details outline the specimen geometry, testing procedure, and data calculation required to perform this standard accurately.
The test method relies on carefully standardized physical parameters to ensure repeatable results. The test specimen must be a rectangular piece of leather measuring exactly 1 in. by 2 in., die-cut from the sample unit. The end of the specimen where the hole is to be punched must be at least 1 in. away from any uncut edge on the unit. The hole, simulating a stitch perforation, is created using a 1/8 in. diameter steel punch, beveled on the outside. A critical dimension is the distance from the center of the hole to the end of the specimen, which must be precisely 5/32 in. A steel rod, 0.095 in. ± 0.005 in. in diameter and at least 1 in.
