Sulfide ion is commonly found in ground waters and wastewater, leading to odor and corrosion issues. This standard test method (D4658-15) provides a reliable means for sulfide measurement using an ion-selective electrode. The method is effective in the range from 0.04 to 4000 mg/L and is primarily validated for reagent water. It is crucial for users to confirm its applicability for other water matrices.
The test employs a pH meter with an expanded millivolt scale (readability of 0.1 mV) or a specific ion meter with direct sulfide concentration capability. A sulfide ion-selective electrode paired with a double-junction sleeve reference electrode is required. The reference electrode outer sleeve must be filled with 1.0 M potassium nitrate solution adjusted to pH 13.5 using 1.0 M sodium hydroxide.
Sample preparation involves treating with sulfide antioxidant buffer (SAOB) to maintain a highly alkaline pH and minimize oxidation, ensuring sulfide exists as free S2- ions.
| 🟦 Equipment | 📏 Specification |
|---|---|
| pH Meter or Specific Ion Meter | Expanded millivolt scale, 0.1 mV resolution or direct concentration scale |
| Sulfide Ion-Selective Electrode | For potentiometric measurement of sulfide |
| Reference Electrode | Double-junction sleeve type, outer sleeve: 1.0 M KNO3, pH 13.5 |
Precision data for this test method were derived from reagent water samples. Users are responsible for validating the method for different water types. Safety is paramount, as acidified sulfide samples can produce highly toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. Appropriate safety and health practices must be followed, including precautions outlined in section 7.5 of the standard.
The method is applicable for sulfide ion concentrations from 0.04 to 4000 mg/L in water.
SAOB fixes the pH at a high alkaline level to convert sulfide to S2- and contains ascorbic acid to prevent air oxidation.
Acidification of sulfide samples releases toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. Always handle with care and use appropriate safety measures.
