ASTM D4603-18 is the standard test method for determining the inherent viscosity (IV) of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). IV is an indirect measure of molecular weight and is crucial for quality control and processability. This method applies to PET that is soluble at a 0.50% (g/dL) concentration in a 60/40 mixture of phenol and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TCE). Highly crystalline PET requiring a different solvent or procedure is excluded from this specific method. Results are comparable to those from Test Method D5225 (differential viscometry).
| 📏 Key Parameter | 📐 Specification (D4603-18) |
|---|---|
| Solvent Composition | 60% Phenol / 40% 1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane (v/v) |
| Solution Concentration | 0.50 g/dL (0.50% weight/volume) |
| Viscometer Type | Ubbelohde Type 1B glass capillary |
| Temperature Control | 25.0 °C (± 0.1 °C) constant-temperature bath |
| Reported Metric | Inherent Viscosity (IV, dL/g) |
The procedure involves precisely dissolving the PET resin, measuring the efflux time of the pure solvent and the polymer solution in the capillary viscometer, and calculating the inherent viscosity from the relative viscosity values.
