D4603-18 – Standard Test Method Technical Guide

🔬 Overview and Scope

ASTM D4603-18 is the standard test method for determining the inherent viscosity (IV) of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). IV is an indirect measure of molecular weight and is crucial for quality control and processability. This method applies to PET that is soluble at a 0.50% (g/dL) concentration in a 60/40 mixture of phenol and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TCE). Highly crystalline PET requiring a different solvent or procedure is excluded from this specific method. Results are comparable to those from Test Method D5225 (differential viscometry).

🧪 Test Method and Standard Parameters

📏 Key Parameter📐 Specification (D4603-18)
Solvent Composition60% Phenol / 40% 1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane (v/v)
Solution Concentration0.50 g/dL (0.50% weight/volume)
Viscometer TypeUbbelohde Type 1B glass capillary
Temperature Control25.0 °C (± 0.1 °C) constant-temperature bath
Reported MetricInherent Viscosity (IV, dL/g)

The procedure involves precisely dissolving the PET resin, measuring the efflux time of the pure solvent and the polymer solution in the capillary viscometer, and calculating the inherent viscosity from the relative viscosity values.

⚠️ Safety Compliance: As cited in Section 1.4.1 of the standard, mercury is a hazardous material and should be handled with extreme caution. Phenol and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane are toxic. Users must consult the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and adhere to all regulatory requirements. Use of alternative low-hazard thermometers (per Specification E2251) is recommended.
💡 Viscometer and Interlaboratory Consistency: The standard specifically requires a Type 1B Ubbelohde viscometer. Note that ISO 1628-5, which covers a similar scope, specifies a Type 1C viscometer and reports Viscosity Number instead of Inherent Viscosity. Always specify the exact test method (e.g., ASTM D4603-18) when reporting data to ensure proper interpretation.
